The Best Steam Deck Screen Protectors

The only decision that matters is glossy versus matte — and if you own an OLED, think twice about matte.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.

Buy the JSAUX 2-pack of tempered glass. It costs about as much as a coffee, you get a spare, and once it is on the screen nothing here outperforms it. The genuine decision is glossy versus anti-glare, and it depends on where you play.

This is a category where the products are close to identical and the marketing works very hard to suggest otherwise. All four here are 9H tempered glass. Once applied, they feel the same under a thumb and protect the same. What actually separates them: whether they come with an applicator frame, how many sheets are in the box, and whether the surface is glossy or etched matte.

The anti-glare trade-off is real and underexplained. A matte etch scatters reflected light — brilliant on a train, in a garden, near a window. It also scatters the light coming out of the panel, which slightly softens the image and mutes colour. On the LCD Deck that is a fair trade. On the OLED, you are dulling the exact quality you paid a premium for.

Pros

  • Two in the box, which matters because your first application will probably have a bubble
  • Glass, not film — it feels like the original screen under a thumb
  • The cheapest per-sheet option here

Cons

  • No applicator frame, so alignment is on you
  • Glossy — it does nothing about reflections

Don't buy this if…

you play outdoors or under a window. Glossy glass turns the screen into a mirror; get the anti-glare instead.

Pros

  • Kills reflections properly — this is a real, visible difference outdoors, not a marketing claim
  • Also hides fingerprints, which the glossy sheets absolutely do not

Cons

  • Matte etching costs you a little sharpness and some colour pop
  • On an OLED, dulling the panel you paid extra for is a genuine trade-off

Don't buy this if…

you have an OLED Deck and play indoors. You bought that screen for its contrast — don't sand it down.

Pros

  • The alignment frame is the entire product and it works — no bubbles, no crooked application
  • Two sheets, so there's a spare even if you somehow still mess it up

Cons

  • Costs noticeably more than the JSAUX for the same 9H glass
  • The frame is landfill the moment you've used it

Don't buy this if…

you're steady-handed and have done this before. You're paying purely for the jig.

Pros

  • Spigen's EZ Fit tray is the most reliable applicator in the business
  • Consistent quality control — you're unlikely to get a dud sheet

Cons

  • Usually a single sheet where the others give you two
  • Costs the most per sheet here and doesn't perform better once it's on

Don't buy this if…

you're comparing on price. Once the glass is on the screen, nothing about this outperforms the JSAUX 2-pack.

How to choose, and how to apply it

Glossy if you play indoors, matte if you don't

That is the whole rule. Anti-glare is transformative outdoors and a downgrade indoors. If you own an OLED and play mostly at home, glossy — do not sand down the panel you bought.

Buy the multi-pack, always

Your first application will probably trap a bubble or sit a millimetre crooked. A 2-pack costs barely more than a single sheet and removes the entire risk. There is no argument for buying one sheet.

The applicator frame is worth it if you have failed before

amFilm's OneTouch tray and Spigen's EZ Fit are jigs that hold the glass square while you lower it. They work. They also cost more, and they are landfill after one use. If you are confident, skip them.

Dust is the enemy, not skill

Almost every failed application is a dust speck, not a shaky hand. Do it in a bathroom after a hot shower — the steam pulls dust out of the air. Clean, dry, then apply immediately. This single trick fixes most of what goes wrong.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We researched published specifications, third-party lab measurements, manufacturer documentation and aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgements from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we are not going to pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's lab, we name them and link them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does the Steam Deck need a screen protector?
It is not strictly necessary — the Deck ships with a reasonably durable screen — but it is the cheapest insurance available for a device you hold over hard surfaces. At the prices here, it is difficult to argue against.
Is an anti-glare screen protector worth it on the Steam Deck OLED?
Only if you play outdoors or in bright rooms. Anti-glare etching scatters reflections, but it also softens the image and mutes colour — which specifically undermines the contrast and punch you paid extra for on an OLED panel. Indoors, we would keep it glossy.
Will a Steam Deck LCD screen protector fit the OLED?
The screen sizes differ slightly between the two models, so a protector cut for one may not align on the other. Check the listing names your model explicitly.
How do I apply a screen protector without bubbles?
Dust is the usual cause, not technique. Apply in a steamy bathroom to settle airborne dust, clean the screen thoroughly, then lower the glass from one edge rather than dropping it flat. Buy a 2-pack so the first attempt is not the only one.
