The important caveat is that this only applies to a dedicated 2.4GHz dongle, not Bluetooth, which really is too slow for gaming. Once you accept that, the wired-versus-wireless decision is not about lag at all. It is about weight, battery and price.

The belief that wireless mice are laggy is one of the most stubborn pieces of outdated advice in PC gaming. It was true a long time ago, when early wireless mice added a delay you genuinely could feel. It stopped being true when companies like Logitech G built dedicated low-latency wireless systems for gaming, and independent testing has repeatedly found that a good 2.4GHz mouse trades blows with a wired one rather than trailing it. Why 2.4GHz wireless is effectively as fast as wired

A gaming wireless mouse does not use your Wi-Fi or your Bluetooth. It ships with a small USB dongle that talks to the mouse over a dedicated 2.4GHz radio link built specifically for one job: moving mouse data to the PC as fast as possible, as often as possible. These systems run at the same high polling rates as wired mice, and the over-the-air transmission of a single mouse report is quick enough that the total delay lands in the same ballpark as sending it down a cable. Here is the nuance that the “wireless is fine now” crowd sometimes skips, and it is the reason the old myth still has a grain of truth. Bluetooth is the slow one. Many wireless mice — especially productivity and travel models — connect over Bluetooth, which was designed for convenience and power efficiency, not low latency. Bluetooth adds noticeably more delay and polls less often than a dedicated 2.4GHz link, and it is genuinely not suitable for fast gaming.

Weight

A wireless mouse has to carry a battery and a radio, so at a given price it tends to be a touch heavier than a wired mouse with the same sensor. Weight matters in a fast shooter — a lighter mouse is easier to flick and less tiring over a long session. The important update is that premium wireless mice have driven their weight down dramatically, to the point where the lightest wireless mice are now lighter than plenty of wired ones. This is the trade-off that survives most strongly. For the same sensor, build quality and shape, a wired mouse is cheaper, because you are not paying for the wireless system. Wireless means charging. Modern gaming mice have largely defanged this — battery life is typically measured in many days of use, and most people simply top up over lunch or overnight and never think about it. Some support charging or even continuous power over a mouse pad, which removes the concern entirely. But it is still one more thing to manage, and a dead battery mid-match is a failure state a wired mouse simply cannot have. If “plug it in and never think about it” is worth a lot to you, that is a legitimate reason to stay wired.

Reliability and the “wireless is flaky” worry

The other half of the old wireless reputation is not lag but dropouts — the fear that the connection will stutter or cut out at the worst moment. On a proper 2.4GHz gaming mouse this is largely a solved problem too, but there is a real-world tip that prevents most of the trouble people do run into: mind where the dongle sits.
