How to Clean a Controller
The safe routine for a grimy gamepad: power down, keep liquid on a cloth or swab, and work the grips, buttons, seams and stick bases — plus the honest line on what cleaning fixes and what it cannot.

Cleaning a controller safely is a short, low-risk routine as long as you keep liquid off the electronics. Power it off, then work from the outside in: wipe the grips and shell, clean around the buttons and their seams, ease grime out from the base of each analogue stick, do the triggers and bumpers, and lift dust from the crevices with a puff of compressed air. The single rule that keeps you out of trouble is that isopropyl alcohol goes onto a cloth or a cotton swab — never poured on, never dripped inside. Do that, let it dry fully before you switch it back on, and a sticky, grimy pad feels new again. The one thing a clean will not fix is true stick drift from a worn-out stick, because that is a hardware fault, not dirt. The routine is the same whether you have an Xbox pad, a PlayStation DualSense, a Switch Pro Controller or a third-party gamepad — the materials and the discipline do not change, only where the buttons and sticks happen to sit.
A controller spends hours pressed into two sweaty palms, which makes it one of the grubbiest things you own. Skin oil, sweat, crumbs, dust and the fine grit that rides in on your fingers all collect in the grips, pack into the button seams and gather in the moat around each stick. Most of that is cosmetic, but some of it genuinely changes how the pad feels — sticky face buttons, a gritty stick, a trigger that no longer glides. The good news is that a gamepad is easy to clean well once you know what each part needs and, just as importantly, what will damage it. What grime actually does to a controller
Cleaning feels optional until you know what the build-up is quietly doing. Four areas suffer, and each shows a different symptom:
- The grips and shell. The textured sides and back are where sweat and skin oil concentrate, so they turn tacky and start to smell before anything else. On a matte or rubberised grip, that oily film is exactly what makes an older pad feel unpleasant in the hand.
- The face buttons and D-pad.Oil and dust work down the gap around each button, and a little grit under a button edge is what makes an A or B feel sticky, slow to spring back, or like it catches on the way down. It is the most common reason a pad suddenly “feels worse” without anything being broken.
- The analogue sticks and their bases.The circular gap where each stick meets the shell — the moat around the stick — is a magnet for dust, hair and grime. A ring of debris packed in there can make the stick feel gritty, scratchy or slightly notchy, and can cause small hitches as it drags against the housing.
- The triggers and bumpers. The pivots and the seams around the shoulder buttons collect the same oily dust. When they do, a smooth analogue trigger can start to feel gravelly or squeaky through its travel.
Safe materials: what to use, what to never use
The right kit is cheap and short, and staying inside it is what keeps a clean from becoming damage. The do list:
- Isopropyl (rubbing) alcoholis the cleaner of choice, because it lifts skin oil and grime and then evaporates quickly, leaving no moisture behind. A higher-strength isopropyl flashes off faster and is the safe pick near anything electronic. Always apply it to a cloth or swab — never pour or drip it onto the pad.
- A microfibre cloth for the shell and grips, and a handful of cotton swabs for the button seams, the stick bases and the triggers.
- Compressed air (a can or an electric duster) to blow dust out of the button seams and the moat around each stick. Keep a can upright and use short bursts so it does not spit cold liquid propellant onto the plastic.
- A dry toothpick or a soft-bristled brushfor teasing packed grime out of the tight seams and the stick base — something that will lift debris without scratching or gouging.
And the do-not list, which matters just as much. No harsh solvents— acetone, paint thinner, bleach, nail-varnish remover or strong household sprays can cloud, etch or discolour the plastic and strip a matte or soft-touch coating. No soaking, and never run a controller under a tap; it is packed with electronics and a battery that water ruins. No liquid poured into the stick base, the button gaps or any seam— those get a barely-damp swab at most, or just dry air. And go easy on alcohol on printed or soft-touch surfaces, where heavy scrubbing can eventually lift lettering or the coating; a light touch is enough. Step by step
1. Power down and disconnect first
Always the first move. Switch the controller off, and on a wired pad unplug the cable; if the battery is removable, you can take it out, though for a surface clean that is optional. Powering down stops stray button presses and phantom inputs while you work and removes any small risk from moisture near the electronics. It costs a few seconds.
2. Wipe the grips and shell
Dampen a microfibre cloth lightlywith isopropyl — damp, not wet — and wipe the whole outer shell, paying attention to the textured grips and the back, where sweat and oil build up most. For rubberised or matte grips, a slightly firmer wipe lifts the tacky film that makes them feel unpleasant. Dry with the other side of the cloth. This step alone transforms how a well-used pad feels.
3. Clean around the buttons and seams
Run an isopropyl-dampened cotton swab around each face button, the D-pad and the seams where the buttons meet the shell, rolling the swab so a clean edge keeps lifting the grime. A toothpick teases out anything packed in tight. Keep the liquid on the swab and out of the button gap, so nothing runs down onto the contacts below. Finish by blowing the seams out with a short burst of compressed air.
4. Work around the analogue sticks and their bases
The moat around each stick is the fiddliest and most rewarding part. Tilt the stick to one side to open up the gap, then use a dry brush or a barely-damp swab to lift the ring of dust and grit out of the base, working all the way around as you rotate the stick. Follow with compressed air to clear the crevice. Wipe the stick top itself — the thumb pad collects a surprising amount of oil. Be gentle and do not force liquid down into the stick housing; the goal is to clear the debris that causes gritty, scratchy movement, not to flood the mechanism.
5. Do the triggers and bumpers
Wipe the shoulder buttons and run a swab along the seams around the triggers and bumpers, then work each one through its full travel a few times so the swab and the air reach into the pivot. A short burst of compressed air into the trigger gap clears the dust that makes an analogue pull feel gravelly.
6. Deal with sticky buttons and stubborn grime
For a button that has gone genuinely sticky— slow to return, or tacky under the thumb — the cause is almost always dried residue (a spilled drink is the classic culprit) worked into the gap around it. Wrap a swab lightly with isopropyl, work it around the button edge, and press the button repeatedly as you go so the alcohol reaches the sticky film and the button wipes itself against the swab. Repeat with a fresh swab until the spring-back feels crisp again. This dissolves surface residue around the button without you having to open the pad. If a button is sticky because something was spilledinside, that is a deeper job — the residue is on the contact pad under the shell, and reaching it means a proper teardown rather than a surface clean.
7. Dry fully, then power on
Give everything a minute or two for the alcohol to flash off — it evaporates fast, but the stick bases, button seams and trigger gaps especially should be visibly dry before you power up. Reconnect or switch on, and check every button, both sticks and both triggers respond cleanly. That is it.
The drift question: what cleaning can and cannot fix
This is the most important honesty on the page, because it is where cleaning gets oversold. A dirty stick base genuinely can cause small problems: dust and grit dragging in the moat can make a stick feel rough, catch slightly, or produce brief hitches, and clearing that debris often smooths the movement back out. So if your stick feels gritty or occasionally snags, a clean is well worth trying first.
But true stick drift— where a character keeps walking, the camera creeps, or a menu scrolls on its own with your thumb nowhere near the stick — is usually a different beast. On the vast majority of controllers the sticks use a potentiometer: a physical contact that wears with every movement and, over time, starts sending a small false signal even at rest. How often, and the short version
A quick wipe of the grips and a glance at the stick bases every couple of weeks keeps a pad feeling fresh; a fuller clean of the buttons, sticks, triggers and seams every month or two, or whenever something starts to feel sticky or gritty, handles the rest. Wireless and wired pads need identical care — the battery and radio change nothing about the routine. The short version: power down, wipe the grips, swab the button seams, clear the stick bases and triggers, keep isopropyl on the cloth and out of every gap, and dry fully before powering on.
