Keyboard “size” is really about which keys the layout keeps and which it drops to save desk space. Once you have chosen your switches, size is the next big decision, and it is the one people most often get wrong in both directions — buying a giant full-size board that crowds the mouse off the desk, or a tiny 60% that leaves them fumbling for arrow keys mid-game. The trade is always the same: fewer keys means a smaller footprint and more room for your mouse, but also more functions buried on a secondary layer you have to memorise. Why size is really about mouse room

For gaming specifically, the hidden reason to care about keyboard size is your mouse. A narrower keyboard lets you push the board left and centre your typing hand, which frees up a wide, unobstructed area on the right for mouse movement. That matters enormously if you play FPS games at a low sensitivity, where a single 180-degree turn can drag the mouse a foot or more across the pad. On a full-size board, the numpad eats exactly the desk real estate your sweeping arm wants, and low-sens players routinely find their mouse colliding with the keyboard mid-flick. Full-size (100%) — everything, at a cost

A close relative, the 1800 / 96% compact, squeezes the numpad up against the main block to reclaim a little width while keeping the number keys, which is a tidy compromise if you want the numpad without the full sprawl.

Tenkeyless (TKL / 80%) — the gaming default

TKLmeans “tenkeyless” — a full-size board with the ten-key numpad removed, around 87 keys. 75% — a TKL squeezed together

A 75%layout keeps almost the same keys as a TKL — function row, arrows, and a few navigation keys — but packs them together with little or no gap between the clusters, often stacking the nav keys into a single column down the right edge. The result is a board barely wider than the main block that still gives you F-keys and arrows without reaching for a layer. The trade-off is that the tightly packed keys sit right against each other, so you can mis-hit a neighbouring key until your fingers adjust — a short learning curve rather than a real loss of function. It is a great pick if you want dedicated function and arrow keys but hate wasted space, and it has become one of the most popular enthusiast sizes for that balance.

65% — small, but you keep your arrows

A 65% board drops the entire function row but keeps the arrow keysand usually a small handful of navigation keys (often Delete, Page Up and Page Down in a right-hand column). That arrow-key survival is the whole point of the size and the main thing separating it from a 60%. You get a genuinely compact board and a big open desk for the mouse, while still having arrows for menus, browsers and games that lean on them — without holding a Fn key. The cost is the function row: to press F1–F12 (and often Escape, if it shares the tilde key) you hold a Fn modifier and press a number. For many games and most everyday use that is a fine trade, which is why 65% is arguably the best balance of small footprint and daily practicality, and a favourite of low-sens FPS players who still want their arrow keys.

60% — maximum desk space, maximum layer

A 60%board strips the layout down to the main alphanumeric block — around 61 keys. No numpad, no function row, no navigation cluster, and no dedicated arrow keys. Everything you lose moves onto a hold-Fnlayer: arrows typically become Fn plus the I / J / K / L or the WASD-adjacent cluster, F-keys become Fn plus the number row, and so on. In exchange you get the smallest, most portable board and the largest possible mouse area — the reason 60% has a devoted following among low-sensitivity FPS players and people who like a clean, minimal desk. The honest catch is the function-layer learning curve: until the combinations are muscle memory, reaching for an arrow key or Delete mid-task is genuinely slower, and some productivity work (anything that leans on F-keys, arrows or navigation) is simply more awkward. It is a fantastic size if you commit to it and a frustrating one if you do not.

The function-layer trade-off, stated plainly
