For gaming, the honest answer is that a good 2.4GHz wireless controller feels essentially identical to a wired one, Bluetooth is the only connection with latency you can actually feel, and the real decision is convenience versus never having to think about a battery. Pay the wireless premium if you value a tidy, cable-free couch setup; stay wired if you want the cheapest reliable pad, zero charging, and a link that can never drop mid-match. The genre you play decides how much any of it matters.
“Is wireless laggy?” is one of the most repeated questions in gaming, and the usual answer — a flat yes or no — is wrong in both directions. Wireless is not one thing. There are two completely different wireless technologies inside the word, and they behave nothing alike: a dedicated 2.4GHz radio link is fast enough that you cannot feel it, while Bluetooth genuinely adds a delay a sensitive player will notice. Lump them together and you either overpay to avoid a problem you did not have, or dismiss modern wireless as a handicap it stopped being years ago. So before the battery and price arguments, the connection itself deserves an honest breakdown.
The latency reality: three tiers, not two
The instinct is to compare “wired” against “wireless.” The more useful frame is three tiers, because two of them are wireless and only one of those is slow.
Wired — the baseline, and the floor
A USB cable sends your inputs down copper the instant you press a button, with no radio link to negotiate. It is the lowest-latency connection there is, it never drops, it never needs charging, and it is the cheapest to build, which is why budget pads and tournament setups both lean on it. Its only real downsides are the tether itself — a cable across the living room, or one that tugs at the pad on a desk — and the wear that connectors and cables eventually pick up. 2.4GHz dongle — effectively as fast as wired
This is the tier people miss. A controller that ships with its own little USB receiver is using a dedicated 2.4GHzradio protocol built for low latency, not Bluetooth. Modern implementations — the Xbox Wireless protocol on its dedicated adapter, and the proprietary 2.4GHz dongles that ship with better third-party pads — are fast enough that the added latency is a fraction of a frame and sits below what a human can perceive. Which genres actually care about the connection
How much any of this matters depends entirely on what you play, and being honest about that saves money.

On a PC there is a second axis that catches people out: even a fast pad can feel broken if Windows does not recognise it properly, and that has nothing to do with latency. Reason from your setup, not from the marketing.
