How to Fix a Flickering Monitor

Flicker feels like a dying screen, but it's usually a loose cable, a wrong refresh-rate setting, or an adaptive-sync edge case — all fixable for free. Here's how to isolate it, cheapest cause first.

A flickering monitor is usually a cheap, fixable problem, not a dead panel. The common causes, roughly in order of likelihood: a loose or failing video cable, a refresh rate set wrong for the display or cable, an adaptive-sync (G-SYNC/FreeSync) brightness-flicker edge case in certain games or menus, an out-of-date or glitchy graphics driver, or a power/outlet issue. Work through them cheapest-first: reseat and swap the cable, set the correct refresh rate, update the GPU driver, and test whether toggling adaptive sync stops it. Only if the flicker persists on a different cable, port and even a different computer is the monitor itself likely at fault.

Start with the cable and connection

The most common cause is the simplest. A DisplayPort or HDMI cable that is loose, damaged, or low-quality can drop the signal intermittently and flicker the screen. Reseat both ends firmly. If you have a spare, swap the cable outright — a failing cable is a frequent culprit and cheap to rule out. Try a different port on the monitor and on the GPU too, in case a specific port is the problem. High refresh at high resolution needs a cable rated for that bandwidth; an underspecced cable can flicker at 144Hz even if it is fine at 60Hz.

Check the refresh rate setting

If the refresh rate is set higher than the display or cable can reliably handle, the picture can flicker or blank intermittently. In Windows display settings, set the refresh rate to a value the monitor officially supports; if it flickers at the maximum, step down one level and see if it stabilises — that points to a cable or port bandwidth limit. Rule out an adaptive-sync flicker

G-SYNC and FreeSynccan, on some panels, cause a visible brightness flicker in specific situations — loading screens, capped-framerate menus, or scenes where the frame rate swings suddenly — because the panel is changing refresh rapidly. If your flicker appears mainly in games or menus and you have adaptive sync on, temporarily turn it off and see if the flicker stops. If it does, that is the cause; a firmware update, a frame-rate cap, or leaving adaptive sync off for that title are the usual remedies. This is a known behaviour, not a broken monitor.

Update drivers and check power

  • Graphics driver.A buggy or outdated GPU driver can cause flickering. Update to the current driver from your card's vendor, or do a clean reinstall. General display troubleshooting steps are on Microsoft Support.
  • Power.Try a different wall outlet, and avoid sharing an overloaded power strip with high-draw devices. A weak or unstable supply can make the backlight flicker. Also make sure the monitor's own power connector is fully seated.
  • Interference. Occasionally a nearby device or a faulty extension lead induces flicker; testing on a different outlet or room helps rule that out.

When it is the monitor

If the flicker follows the monitor across a new cable, a different port, and a second computer — and it is not tied to adaptive sync — the panel or its internal power board is likely failing, and it is a warranty/repair or replacement situation.
