How to Remap Controller Buttons

Remapping is available on every modern platform, but the tool changes with the platform. Here is the accurate way to remap on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, plus hardware remapping with back paddles.

Every modern platform can remap controller buttons — the difference is the tool. On PC the most flexible option is Steam Input, which rebinds any button per game; Windows also has basic options. On Xbox you use the built-in Xbox Accessories app to build custom profiles. On PlayStation the PS5 handles it through the Custom Button Assignments accessibility setting. On Switch, System Settings has a Change Button Mapping option. And on controllers with back paddles or vendor software, you can map buttons in the hardware itself so the remap travels with the controller to any device. Remapping is one of the highest-value tweaks in gaming and one of the most underused, because people assume the factory layout is the only layout. It is not. Whether you want to swap two buttons you keep confusing, move a critical action off a face button so you never lift your thumb off the stick, or rebind an entire controller for comfort or accessibility, the capability is already sitting in your system — you just have to know which menu it lives in on your platform. Common remaps worth making

Before the how, a quick word on the why, because a good remap is worth far more than most people expect. The changes that pay off tend to fall into a few clear patterns, and knowing them helps you decide what to bind where:

  • Move actions off the sticks: binding jump, crouch, slide or reload to a back paddle or a shoulder button lets you keep both thumbs on the sticks in a shooter, so you never have to choose between aiming and pressing a face button. This is the single most impactful remap for competitive play, and the main reason paddle controllers exist.
  • Swap confusing buttons:if you keep hitting the wrong face button in a particular game, swapping the two ends the mistake instantly — far easier than retraining years of muscle memory across every other game you own.
  • Fix awkward defaults: some games place a critical action somewhere uncomfortable; moving it to a button you can reach without shifting your grip removes a small, constant friction you may not even notice you are fighting.
  • Accessibility:remapping can turn a press-and-hold into a single tap, mirror a layout for one-handed play, or move an input that a particular hand finds hard to reach — which is exactly why Sony and Nintendo file the feature under their accessibility menus rather than a general controls page.

With that in mind, the practical question is only where the remap should live: in the game, in the platform, or in the controller itself. Each layer has a different tool, and each suits a different situation, so the rest of this guide takes them one at a time.

Remapping on PC

Steam Input (the most flexible option)

For most PC players the best remapping tool is Steam Input, Valve's controller layer built into Steam. Open a game's controller configuration in Steam and you can reassign any physical button to a different action, add secondary functions, build per-game profiles, and remap sticks, triggers and the D-pad — and it works with Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and many third-party controllers. Windows and per-game options

Outside Steam, remapping on Windows is more piecemeal. Many individual games ship their own control rebinding menus, which is the simplest route when it exists — check the game's options before reaching for anything else. Windows itself does not offer a deep system-wide controller remapper the way Steam Input does, so for global remapping outside Steam most people turn to first-party or vendor software (below) or a hardware remap that the controller stores itself.

Remapping on Xbox

On Xbox consoles (and on Windows for Xbox controllers), the official tool is the free Xbox Accessories app. Install it, connect your controller, and you can build custom profilesthat swap any button for another, invert sticks, adjust trigger and stick behaviour, and — on controllers that have them, such as the Elite series — assign actions to the rear paddles. Standard Xbox Wireless Controllers support button remapping through the app as well, not just the premium models. A powerful detail: profiles can be saved to the controller on supported models, so the mapping is stored in the pad and carries over. Remapping on PlayStation (PS5)

On the PS5, button remapping lives in the accessibility settings as Custom Button Assignments. Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Controllers, and enable custom button assignments; from there you can reassign nearly any button on the DualSense to a different one, swap the sticks, or turn a press-and-hold into a single press. It is a system-level remap, so it applies across games rather than per title, and you toggle it on or off from the same menu. Because Sony files this under accessibility, it is easy to miss if you only look in the main controller menu — but it is the official, supported way to remap a DualSense. Remapping on Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch added system-level remapping in a software update under Settings, then Controllers and Sensors, then Change Button Mapping. You pick the controller — Joy-Con or Pro Controller — and reassign buttons, with the option to save several mappings and switch between them. As on PlayStation, it is a system setting that applies across games rather than a per-game tool, and it will not remap the sticks' directions the way a full PC configurator can, but it comfortably handles swapping face and shoulder buttons. Hardware remapping: back paddles and vendor software

The most portable kind of remap is the one stored in the controller itself, because it travels with the pad to any console or PC regardless of what that device supports. This comes in two common forms:

  • Back paddles or rear buttons:premium and many third-party controllers add extra inputs on the underside that you assign to duplicate a face button. The payoff is that you can press jump, crouch or reload with a spare finger while keeping both thumbs on the sticks — a genuine advantage in fast games. You assign what each paddle does through the controller's companion app or, on some pads, an on-controller button combination.
  • Vendor software and on-board profiles:many controller makers ship their own PC apps that write a remap into the controller's memory. Once stored, that mapping persists when you plug the pad into a console that has no idea the app exists, which is exactly why hardware remapping is the most universal option.

The trade-off is that hardware remapping depends entirely on the controller you own, so it is a buying consideration as much as a settings one.
