How to Calibrate a Game Controller
If your aim pulls to one side, your character walks on its own, or a trigger feels dead at the edges, calibration re-teaches the controller its own resting points and range. Here is how, on every major platform.

Calibrating a controller re-teaches it two things: where its analog sticks and triggers sit when you are not touching them, and how far they physically travel. That fixes a cluster of annoying faults — aim that pulls to one side, a character that drifts when the sticks are centred, or a trigger that feels dead near the end of its travel. On Windows you can calibrate through the old “Set up USB game controllers” tool; Steam has a full controller calibration and test screen; and Xbox and PlayStation offer their own setup and update tools. Calibration cures a mis-learned centre point — but if the fault is worn hardware, it only masks it, and a deadzone or a repair is the real answer. The key idea is that a controller has to know its own neutral position to report your input accurately, and calibration is how you correct that reference when it drifts.
What calibration actually does
An analog stick reports its position as a value, and the controller has to know which value means “centred, hands off.” Over time, or after a knock, that reference can shift, so the controller thinks a slightly-off-centre stick is neutral — and now your character creeps in a direction you are not pushing. Calibration walks the controller through its full range (you move each stick in a circle and pull each trigger fully) so it re-learns the true centre and the true extremes. Done right, it restores accurate, centred input and full trigger range. It is the correct first fix for off-centre aim and mild drift.
How to calibrate on each platform
- Windows.Search for “Set up USB game controllers,” open it, select your controller, choose Properties, and run the Calibrate wizard. It steps you through centring the sticks and moving them to their extremes, then saves the result. It is an old tool, but it still works for most wired and wireless pads.
- Steam.In Steam's settings under Controller, you can open a test and calibration screen that shows exactly what the sticks and triggers are reporting in real time and lets you calibrate and set deadzones. It is the most transparent option on PC because you can see the drift as it happens.
- Xbox. Xbox controllers largely self-calibrate, but you should keep the controller firmware up to date through the Xbox Accessories app, which occasionally improves stick and trigger behaviour. The official Xbox Support pages cover the update process.
- PlayStation. The DualSense manages its own calibration, and the main user-facing step is keeping its firmware updated and, if drift appears, resetting the controller with the small reset button on the back. The official PlayStation support pages document the reset and update steps.
Calibration versus stick drift
This is the distinction that saves people the most frustration. If your controller developed drift suddenly after a knock, or the centre point is simply mis-learned, calibration genuinely fixes it. But if the drift came on gradually and gets worse over time, the cause is usually physical wear in the potentiometer-based sticks — the sensors literally wearing out — and no amount of calibration permanently cures worn hardware. In that case calibration or a widened deadzone only masks the problem, and the real fixes are a repair, a replacement, or a controller with hall-effect sticks, which do not wear in the same way. Where deadzones fit
Calibration and deadzones solve related problems from different angles. Calibration corrects where the controller thinks centre is; a deadzone defines how muchstick movement to ignore around that centre before registering input. A small amount of drift can be papered over by widening the deadzone so the tiny off-centre reading is treated as neutral — but a bigger deadzone also makes the stick feel less responsive to small, deliberate movements, so it is a trade, not a free fix. A quick pre-calibration checklist
Before you calibrate, rule out the simple stuff, because a couple of these masquerade as needing calibration.
- Clean around the sticks.Grit under the stick base causes erratic input that looks like a calibration fault. A little compressed air or isopropyl alcohol around the base can clear it — our how to clean a controller guide covers it.
- Update the firmware first. On console controllers especially, an update can resolve stick and trigger quirks before you touch calibration.
- Test in more than one game.If the “drift” only happens in one title, it may be that game's sensitivity or deadzone settings, not the controller at all.
