Mouse Polling Rate, Explained
Polling rate is how often your mouse tells the PC where it is. Going from 125 Hz to 1000 Hz is a real, felt upgrade. Going past 1000 Hz is a much smaller gain that can cost you frames.

Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position to the PC, measured in hertz (Hz). At 1000 Hz it reports a thousand times a second — once every millisecond. The upgrade from an old 125 Hz mouse to 1000 Hz is genuine and worth having: it cuts the worst-case delay between moving the mouse and the PC knowing about it from 8 ms to 1 ms. Going beyond 1000 Hz — to 4000 or 8000 Hz — is real but tiny, and it costs CPU time that can drop your frame rate. For almost everyone, 1000 Hz is the right answer.
Polling rate is having a marketing moment. Manufacturers have moved from 1000 Hz being the flagship number to advertising 4000 and 8000 Hz, and shoppers are being told, once again, that a bigger number is a better mouse. As with DPI, the truth is more nuanced: the first big jump matters a lot, and the ones after it matter much less while quietly asking your PC for more work. Here is what the number actually does and where the returns flatten out.
What polling rate means
Your mouse does not stream a continuous signal; it takes discrete snapshots of where it is and sends them to the PC at a fixed interval. The polling rate is how many of those snapshots it sends per second. The maths is simple and worth internalising because it explains everything else:
- 125 Hz — a report every 8 ms. The old Windows default for basic mice.
- 500 Hz — a report every 2 ms.
- 1000 Hz — a report every 1 ms. The standard for gaming mice for over a decade.
- 8000 Hz — a report every 0.125 ms. The current high-end ceiling.
That interval is a source of latency, because in the worst case the PC has to wait a full interval to learn that you moved. At 125 Hz that worst-case wait is 8 ms; at 1000 Hz it is 1 ms. The first jump is real: get to 1000 Hz
If there is one actionable takeaway, it is this: make sure your mouse is running at 1000 Hz. The move from 125 Hz to 1000 Hz cuts worst-case reporting delay eight-fold and cleans up the feel of fast flicks noticeably. Every dedicated gaming mouse supports 1000 Hz, and many are already set there out of the box — but not all are, and a generic office mouse very likely is not. How to check and set your polling rate
Do not assume; verify. There are three reliable places to find and change the rate, and it is worth a two-minute check the first time you set a mouse up:
- The mouse's own software.Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, and the equivalents from other brands all expose a polling-rate (or “report rate”) setting, usually offering 125, 500 and 1000 Hz, with 2000/4000/8000 on mice that support it. This is the authoritative place to set it. If you are on a Logitech G or Razer mouse, the setting lives right alongside the DPI stages.
- An onboard button or switch. Some mice let you cycle the polling rate with a button on the underside or a combination at plug-in, so you do not need software running. Check the manual for the combo, because it varies by model.
- A verification tool.If you want to confirm the mouse is genuinely hitting the rate you set rather than just claiming it, a free polling-rate tester measures the real interval as you move the mouse. It is the honest way to catch a mouse that is set to 1000 Hz but only delivering 500 in practice.
One thing worth knowing: a stable, consistent polling rate matters more than a high one. A mouse that holds a steady 1000 Hz is better than one that claims 8000 Hz but stutters between rates under load, because inconsistency is exactly the kind of thing your hand learns to distrust. Past 1000 Hz: real, small, and not free
So if 1000 Hz is good, are 4000 and 8000 Hz four and eight times better? No — and this is where the marketing gets ahead of the reality. The catch is diminishing returns. Going from 125 to 1000 Hz removes 7 ms of worst-case delay. Going from 1000 to 8000 Hz removes, at most, another 0.875 ms — less than a single millisecond, spread across a change that sounds eight times bigger. Each doubling of the polling rate halves an already-small number, so the absolute benefit shrinks fast even as the spec looks ever more impressive.
And unlike the jump to 1000 Hz, higher rates are not free. Every poll is a small interrupt the CPU has to service, so at 8000 Hz your CPU is handling eight thousand mouse reports a second instead of one thousand. On a strong CPU with headroom to spare this is fine; on a mid-range or older CPU, or in a game that is already pushing the processor hard, the extra overhead can loweryour frame rate — and losing frames costs you far more latency and smoothness than the fraction of a millisecond you gained from the higher poll. When higher than 1000 Hz is actually worth it
- You have a very high-refresh display (240 Hz or more)and a strong CPU with frame rate to spare. This is the scenario where an 8000 Hz poll can show a small, measurable benefit.
- You are a competitive player chasing every last edgeand can verify your frame rate is not dropping when you raise the rate. If enabling it costs you frames, turn it back down — the frames matter more.
- For everyone else, 1000 Hz is the sweet spot. It captures nearly all of the real benefit with none of the CPU risk, which is why it has been the gaming standard for years.
Vendors like Razer (HyperPolling) and Logitech G now ship high-polling-rate mice and dongles, and they work as advertised — just go in understanding you are buying a small refinement, not a transformation, and watch your frame rate when you turn it on.
Wireless polling: no longer a compromise
For years, “wireless” implied a lower polling rate, but that is outdated. The one wireless connection that is a compromise is Bluetooth, which typically caps out around 125 Hz and adds noticeable latency — fine for a laptop or travel, wrong for gaming. So the rule is not “avoid wireless” but “use the 2.4 GHz dongle, not Bluetooth, when you game.” A quality dongle-connected wireless mouse gives up nothing meaningful on polling to a wired one.
