Mechanical Keyboard Switch Types, Explained
There are really only three families — linear, tactile and clicky. The colour names are a rough shorthand, not a standard. Here is how each feels, what actuation force and point mean, and which one to pick.

Almost every mechanical keyboard switch belongs to one of three families: linear (smooth all the way down), tactile (a bump you can feel partway down), or clicky (a bump plus an audible click). The red / brown / blue colour names you see everywhere are a rough shorthand for those three, not an industry standard, so a “red” from one brand does not feel identical to a “red” from another. Gaming leans linear and typing leans tactile, but that is a preference, not a rule — and once you understand feel, force and actuation point, you can pick a switch on purpose instead of on a colour.
Switch choice is the single most personal decision on a mechanical keyboard, and it is the one most buyers make blind — they see “Blue switches” on a box, have no idea what that implies, and end up with a keyboard that clacks like a typewriter in a shared room, or a mushy one that feels nothing like the crisp board a friend recommended. The good news is that the whole subject collapses into a few clear ideas. Learn the three families, learn what the numbers on a spec sheet mean, and the marketing colours stop being a mystery.
The three families: linear, tactile, clicky
Every mechanical switch is a spring-loaded stem that a key press pushes down until it registers, then releases back up. What separates the families is what happens on the way down.
Linear — smooth top to bottom
A linearswitch travels in one uninterrupted, consistent motion from the moment you press to the point it bottoms out. There is no bump, no catch, nothing to tell your finger the key has registered except the feeling of the keystroke itself. The archetype is the Cherry MX Red, and almost every brand has an equivalent — Razer's Yellow, Gateron Red, and so on. Linears are the quietest of the three mechanical families (though not silent), and they are the reason many players describe a keyboard as feeling “fast”: there is nothing physically pushing back against a rapid double-tap. If you want a genuinely smooth, low-resistance feel, this is the family.
Tactile — a bump you can feel
A tactileswitch adds a small bump partway through the press, right around the point the keystroke registers. You feel a slight resistance, then a release, and that feedback tells your finger the key has actuated without you having to bottom the key out against the plate. The archetype is the Cherry MX Brown. Tactiles are popular with people who type a lot, because the bump gives a sense of confirmation on every key, and they are only marginally louder than a linear — the bump is felt, not heard. Many people who do a mix of gaming and typing land here as the sensible all-rounder.
Clicky — a bump plus an audible click
A clickyswitch is essentially a tactile switch with a dedicated mechanism — a click jacket or a click bar — that produces a sharp, deliberate click sound at the actuation point, on top of the tactile bump. The archetype is the Cherry MX Blue. Clickies are loved by a certain kind of typist for the satisfying, unambiguous feedback, and disliked by everyone within earshot: they are by far the loudest family, and they are a poor choice for a shared room, an office, a voice call, or a stream with an open mic. If you love the sound, nothing else scratches the itch; if you share your space, this is the family to avoid.
The red / brown / blue shorthand — and why it is imperfect
Those colour names come from Cherry MX, the German switch maker whose colour coding the rest of the industry adopted as a loose convention: red = linear, brown = tactile, blue = clicky. It is a genuinely useful mental map, and if you remember only one thing about switch colours, remember that trio. But treat it as a rough guide, not a specification, for two reasons.
First, colours are not standardised across brands.Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, Razer, Logitech and dozens of others each run their own colour schemes, and while most honour the red-linear / brown-tactile / blue-clicky convention, the actual feel, weight and smoothness of two “reds” from different makers can differ noticeably. A budget red can feel scratchy where a premium red feels glassy, even though the spec sheet says the same family. Second, some brands invent their own names entirely — Razer and Logitech G both ship proprietary switches with their own labels, and Razer even makes optical versions of each family, which we cover in our optical vs mechanical guide. Actuation force and actuation point — the two numbers that matter
Beyond the family, two measured numbers define how a switch behaves, and they are where the spec sheet finally earns its keep.
Actuation forceis how hard you have to press before the key registers, measured in grams-force (gf) or centinewtons (cN); the two are close enough to read interchangeably. A common light linear such as a Cherry MX Red sits around 45 gf; heavier switches like a Cherry MX Black run nearer 60 gf and take more deliberate presses. Lighter switches feel faster and fatigue your fingers less over a long session, but they also make accidental key presses easier; heavier switches feel more deliberate and resist mistakes but tire you sooner. There is no “best” weight — it is a comfort preference, and the honest way to find yours is to try a couple rather than trust a number.
Actuation point(also called pre-travel) is how far the key moves before it registers, measured in millimetres. A standard MX-style switch actuates around 2 mm into roughly 4 mm of total travel. So-called “speed” switchesshorten that pre-travel — often to around 1.2 mm — so the key registers sooner, which a few competitive players prefer, at the cost of making light accidental presses easier still. Because these numbers vary between manufacturers and marketing rarely tells the whole story, independent labs like RTINGS publish actual force curves and measured pre-travel for specific keyboards — a far better guide than the round numbers on the box. Gaming versus typing: which family, honestly
The common advice — linear for gaming, tactile for typing— is a reasonable starting point, and here is the reasoning behind it rather than the slogan.
- For gaming, linears are the popular defaultbecause the smooth, bump-free travel suits rapid, repeated presses — there is nothing to fight against when you spam a key — and many players find the consistent feel easier to modulate. This is a genuine tendency, not a law: plenty of excellent players use tactiles or even clickies and play just as well. If a bump helps you feel your inputs, a tactile is a perfectly good gaming switch.
- For typing, tactiles are the popular default because the bump confirms each keystroke, which many touch typists find reduces errors and feels more satisfying over long documents. Clickies take that further with sound, which some typists love and every roommate hates.
- For a shared space or a stream, quiet matters more than family loyalty — a linear, or better a silent linear (below), keeps you from broadcasting every keystroke on an open mic.
If you genuinely do not know, a light linear or a light tactile are the two safest first mechanical switches, because both are pleasant for mixed use and neither is loud. Silent switches and the noise question
Noise is a real, practical factor, not a footnote, and it is where switch choice most affects the people around you. Roughly ordered from loudest to quietest: clicky is loudest by a distance, tactile is moderate, standard linear is quieter, and silent switches are quietest of all.
Silent switches (silent linears and silent tactiles, such as Cherry MX Silent Red) add small dampening pads inside the stem that soften both the bottom-out thud and the top-out clack — the two impacts that make most of a keyboard's noise. They feel slightly less crisp and a touch mushier than their non-silent versions, which is the trade for the quiet, but for a bedroom, an office, a shared desk or a microphone-on stream they are the single most effective way to keep a mechanical keyboard from being a nuisance. How to choose without overthinking it
Start with the family, because it is the biggest lever: pick linear if you want smooth and fast and lean toward gaming, tactile if you want feedback and lean toward typing or mixed use, and clicky only if you love the sound and control your own acoustic space. Then use force and actuation point to fine-tune: lighter and shorter for speed, heavier and standard for deliberate presses. Treat the colour name as a hint about the family and nothing more, and lean on measured reviews for the actual feel.
