Refresh Rate Explained

Hz is how many times a second your screen redraws. It only helps when your PC or console can push frames to match — and the jump from 60Hz is the one you actually feel.

A monitor's refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is simply how many times per second it can redraw the image. A 144Hz panel refreshes up to 144 times a second; a 60Hz panel, 60. Higher refresh means motion looks smoother and the picture updates sooner — but only if your PC or console is actually rendering enough frames per second (fps) to feed it. Refresh rate is one of the most misunderstood monitor specs, so it is worth separating what it does from what the marketing implies.

Refresh rate vs frame rate: they are not the same thing

Two numbers get confused constantly. Refresh rate (Hz)is a property of the monitor — the ceiling on how often it can update. Frame rate (fps) is how many frames your graphics hardware actually produces. The experience is capped by whichever is lower. Put a 165Hz monitor on a machine that runs a game at 70fps and you see roughly 70fps of smoothness; the extra Hz sit idle. Conversely, a game running at 200fps on a 60Hz screen still only shows 60 distinct images a second, and the mismatch causes screen tearingunless you sync the two. What each tier actually feels like

  • 60Hz— the long-time baseline. Perfectly usable, and still standard for a lot of console and slower-paced play. Motion has visible blur when you whip the camera around.

  • 240Hz— a real but smaller step, most noticeable in fast shooters where you flick and track quickly. Whether it is worth it is genuinely debated; see is 240Hz worth it.

The pattern is one of diminishing returns: each doubling of Hz halves the time between frames, so the absolute improvement shrinks as the numbers climb. Blur Busters' motion research documents exactly why higher refresh reduces perceived motion blur, and why the returns taper.

Refresh rate does not fix motion blur or lag on its own

Higher Hz reduces sample-and-hold motion blur, but it is not the same spec as response time— how fast pixels change colour. A high-refresh panel with slow pixels can still smear, which shows up as ghosting. Refresh rate also is not the same as input lag, though a higher refresh does shave a little off the time between a frame being ready and you seeing it. Feeding a high-refresh panel

To use the Hz you paid for, three things have to line up: a GPU/console that renders enough frames, a cable and port that carry the bandwidth (a high refresh at high resolution needs DisplayPort or a capable HDMI version, per VESA), and the refresh rate actually selected in your OS — Windows often defaults new monitors to 60Hz. So how much refresh rate should you buy?

Match it to what your hardware can drive and what you play. For a console or a mixed-use PC, 120/144Hz is the sweet spot and a clear upgrade over 60Hz. Does a higher refresh rate make you a better gamer?
It can help in fast competitive games by making motion clearer and shaving a little latency, but it is a small edge, not a skill upgrade. The biggest, most obvious improvement is going from 60Hz to 120/144Hz; beyond that the benefit shrinks and mostly matters to serious shooter players.
Do I need a fast PC to use a 144Hz monitor?
To get the full benefit, yes — your PC or console has to render close to 144 frames per second in the games you play, or you only see as much smoothness as your frame rate provides. A 144Hz monitor still works fine at lower frame rates; you just are not using all the Hz. Adaptive sync keeps it smooth when frame rate dips.
Why is my new monitor stuck at 60Hz?
Windows and consoles often default a new display to 60Hz even when it supports more. Select the higher rate in your display settings, and make sure you are using a cable and port with enough bandwidth (usually DisplayPort, or a recent HDMI version) for your resolution and refresh combination.
