Do You Need a Capture Card?
This is the most common wasted purchase in streaming. Four situations genuinely require a capture card, and if you are not in one of them, you can keep your money.

If you play and stream on the same PC, you do not need a capture card. OBS captures your gameplay in software, for free, with no additional hardware and no HDMI cables involved. You need a card in exactly four situations: streaming a console, streaming from a second PC, using a real camera as your webcam, or recording something that will not run on your streaming machine at all. That is the whole answer. The rest of this page explains why the confusion exists and what to do in each of the four cases.
Why so many people buy one they will never use
Capture cards are heavily marketed as streaming equipment, and every photo of a serious streaming desk has one on it. What is rarely said is that the card is there because that desk has a console or a second machine attached. For the single-PC setup most people actually have, the card sits in the box.
The software route is genuinely equivalent for that case. OBS's Game Capture and Display Capture sources read the frame buffer directly, with hardware encoding handled by your GPU. The OBS Studio documentation covers the setup. Modern GPU encoders cost only a few percent of your frame rate, which is why the dual-PC setups that were once standard have largely disappeared.
The four cases where you do need one
- You are streaming a console. A PS5, Xbox or Switch outputs over HDMI and has no way to send video to your PC otherwise. This is the main reason to buy a card, and our best capture cards for streaming page ranks the options by the spec that matters.
- You stream from a second PC. A dedicated streaming machine takes HDMI from the gaming machine, which needs a card. Worth doing only if your gaming PC genuinely cannot keep up, which is rarer than it used to be.
- You want to use a real camera as a webcam. A DSLR, mirrorless or action camera with clean HDMI output needs a card such as the Elgato Cam Link to appear as a video source. The image quality gap over a webcam is large.
- You are capturing hardware that will not run on the PC.Retro consoles, handhelds over HDMI, a Steam Deck in a dock — anything with an HDMI output and no software capture route.
If you do need one: two things to know first
Pass-through decides which card to buy, not capture resolution.The pass-through signal is what reaches your own TV while you play, in real time. If your TV is 4K120 and the card's pass-through is 1080p60, you have downgraded the thing you actually experience in order to record something viewers will see at 1080p regardless.
HDCP will block you on PlayStation.Sony applies copy protection to console output, and with it on a capture card shows a black screen. It can be turned off for games in the console's settings — the official PlayStation support pages document where — but it stays enabled for video apps by design. Xbox handles this differently and is generally less trouble.
What to buy instead, if the answer is no
Spend the money on audio. A USB microphone and a boom arm will improve your stream far more than any capture hardware, and the two together cost less than the cheapest card worth buying — which is the logic our streaming setup under $200 page is built around.
