144Hz vs 240Hz: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

The gains from higher refresh shrink fast. 144Hz is the value sweet spot for almost everyone; 240Hz pays off for a specific kind of competitive player who can actually feed it.

144Hz is the refresh-rate sweet spot for almost everyone, and the jump up from 60Hz to 144Hz is the biggest, most obvious improvement you can make to how a game feels. 240Hz is a real upgrade on top of that — but a much smaller one, with sharply diminishing returns, and it only pays off if your PC can actually push frame rates near 240 in the games you play.

Refresh rate is how many times per second your monitor redraws the image, measured in hertz. More is smoother. But “more is smoother” hides the important part, which is that the returns are front-loaded: the first big jump transforms the experience, and every jump after that does less than the one before. Understanding that curve is how you avoid overpaying for the flat end of it.

Why the returns diminish — the frame-time math

The cleanest way to see this is to look at how long each frame stays on screen, because that is what your eyes actually experience:

Going 60→144 cuts roughly 10 milliseconds off how long a frame lingers. Going 144→240 cuts under 3. Each step up the ladder gives you a smaller absolute gain than the last, because you are dividing into ever-larger numbers. This is why the honest answer to “is 240Hz twice as good as 120Hz?” is a firm no — the perceived improvement is nowhere near proportional to the number on the box. Display-motion researchers like Blur Busters have documented this diminishing-returns curve in depth.

The first jump is the one that matters: 60Hz to 144Hz

If you are still on a 60Hz monitor, this is the most important sentence on the page: the upgrade you should be excited about is the one to 144Hz, not the one from 144 to 240. Going from 60Hz to 144Hz roughly doubles the smoothness of everything — your mouse cursor, scrolling, aiming, camera panning — and it is immediately, unmistakably obvious to essentially everyone, gamer or not. It is the single best-value display upgrade in PC gaming, and it is the reason 144Hz (and its close cousins 165Hz and 180Hz) became the standard rather than a luxury.

The trap is assuming that if 60→144 felt that transformative, then 144→240 must be similar. It is not, because of the frame-time curve above — the same doubling of the number delivers a fraction of the felt improvement. Anchoring on how good the first jump felt is exactly how people talk themselves into overpaying for the second one.

The requirement people forget: you have to feed it

A 240Hz monitor only shows you 240 distinct frames per second if your PC actually renders 240 frames per second. If your graphics card and CPU are producing 120fps in a given game, a 240Hz panel and a 144Hz panel will look almost identical in that game, because the extra refreshes have nothing new to display. This is the trap: people buy the 240Hz monitor and pair it with hardware — or play games — that cannot get anywhere near 240fps, and then wonder why it does not feel dramatically different.

And frame rate is tied directly to the resolution you run. Hitting 240fps is realistic at 1080p in competitive titles; it is much harder at 1440p, and harder still in graphically heavy games at any resolution. So a 240Hz purchase quietly implies a whole set of other commitments: a strong GPU, often a lower resolution, and games light enough to run that fast. If you are not meeting all three, you are paying for a ceiling you will never touch.

Who actually benefits from 240Hz

There is a real group for whom 240Hz is worth it, and it is worth being specific rather than pretending everyone should chase it or nobody should:

  • Competitive FPS players in titles like CS2, Valorant, Apex or Overwatch, who run at settings and resolutions that actually produce 240+ fps, and who play at a level where a small reduction in motion blur and input lag is a meaningful edge.
  • People highly sensitive to motion clarity who genuinely notice and value the slightly cleaner fast-flick tracking that a higher refresh gives.

For that player, the upgrade is legitimate — flick shots and tracking a fast-moving target do get a touch cleaner, and at the top of the skill curve small edges add up. We do not dispute it, and our best gaming monitors under $500 include fast panels built for exactly this.

The honest “most people won't notice” verdict

For everyone else — which is most people — the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz is subtle, and in blind viewing plenty of players cannot reliably tell them apart in normal gameplay. If you play a mix of single-player and multiplayer games, if you are not competing at a high level, or if your PC will not consistently push past ~144fps, the money is better spent elsewhere. A great 144Hz monitor plus a stronger graphics card will feel better than a 240Hz monitor your rig cannot feed.

There is also a quality-of-panel angle that cuts against blindly chasing hertz. At a given price, a higher refresh number sometimes comes at the expense of other things that matter more to the picture — contrast, colour, response-time consistency and the type of panel. A superb 144Hz IPS or OLED can look clearly better in motion than a mediocre 240Hz panel, because raw refresh is only one ingredient of motion clarity; pixel response time and how the panel handles fast transitions matter just as much. Modern fast IPS and OLED panels have largely closed the old gap where high refresh forced you onto a worse TN panel, but the tradeoff has not vanished — always weigh the whole spec, not just the Hz.

Response time: the other half of motion clarity

Refresh rate tells the panel how often to change the image; pixel response time tells you how quicklyeach pixel can actually finish changing colour. If the pixels cannot keep up, you get smearing and ghosting behind moving objects even on a high-refresh panel — the monitor is advertising 240 refreshes a second that its own pixels cannot cleanly deliver. This is why a 240Hz panel with sluggish pixels can look worse in motion than a 144Hz panel with fast ones. When you compare monitors, treat refresh rate and response time as a pair; a big Hz number attached to a slow panel is a spec-sheet win and a real-world disappointment. It is also why OLED gaming monitors look so clean in motion despite “only” matching the refresh of good LCDs — their pixel response is near instant.

What about 165Hz, 180Hz, 360Hz and beyond?

The market does not stop at round numbers. 165Hz and 180Hz are, for practical purposes, 144Hz with a tiny bonus — buy them happily if they are the same price, but do not pay a premium chasing the difference. At the top end, 360Hz and 480Hz exist and are aimed squarely at professional and aspiring-professional FPS players with the hardware to feed them; the diminishing-returns logic on this page applies even harder there. For almost everyone, the ladder that matters is 60 → 144, and everything above 144 is a specialist purchase.

So what should you buy?

For almost everyone, target a good 144Hz (or 165Hz) monitor — it captures nearly all of the benefit of high refresh at a far friendlier price, and it is easy to feed. Step up to 240Hz only if you are a competitive FPS player with hardware that can actually hit those frame rates. Buy a good 144Hz to 180Hz monitor unless you are a competitive FPS player whose PC can genuinely hold frame rates near 240 — in which case the extra refresh is a legitimate, if small, edge. Everyone else should take the money the 240Hz premium would have cost and put it toward a better panel, a stronger graphics card, or a higher resolution, all of which you are far more likely to actually notice. High refresh is one of the best upgrades in gaming; paying for refresh your hardware cannot feed is one of the most common ways to waste money on it.
