The OLED is not a small refresh. It is a better handheld in nearly every category — but the LCD is still a very good machine at a lower price, and that is the whole decision.

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if you can afford it. It is a better handheld than the LCD in almost every category that matters — the screen, the battery, the weight, the Wi-Fi — and the upgrades are real, not marketing. The LCD is still an excellent machine and the cheaper way into SteamOS. If the price gap is the deciding factor, you are not making a mistake by choosing it. That is genuinely the whole decision, and everything below is the detail behind it.

The OLED is a mid-generation upgrade, not a new generation

The most important thing to understand is what the OLED is not: it is not a meaningfully faster Steam Deck. Valve did not put a new, more powerful chip in it. Games do not run at higher frame rates on the OLED than the LCD in any way you will notice. Both models play the same library at the same performance, and both use the same SteamOS with the same suspend and resume, the same Verified badges, the same everything on the software side.

What the OLED changes is how the device feels to hold and look at. It is a refinement of the original, and Valve was open about that. So the question is never “which is faster” — it is “are the quality-of-life upgrades worth the price difference to you.” For most people, they are. But the framing matters, because if you were expecting the OLED to run demanding games the LCD chokes on, it will not.

What the OLED actually improves

  • The screen. This is the headline and it earns it. The OLED panel is larger, brighter, and delivers the true blacks and contrast an LCD physically cannot. In a dark room the difference is not subtle — it is the single most noticeable upgrade, and it is the reason most owners who switch do not want to go back.
  • Refresh rate.The OLED runs at a higher 90Hz refresh against the LCD's 60Hz. It does not make games run faster, but menus, the SteamOS interface and anything that can hit the higher rate feel visibly smoother.
  • Battery life. The OLED has a larger battery and a more efficient panel, so it lasts materially longer on a charge at comparable settings. For a handheld, more time away from the wall is one of the most valuable upgrades there is.
  • Weight. Despite the bigger screen and battery, the OLED is lighter than the LCD. On a device you hold for hours, shaving weight is a comfort upgrade you feel in your wrists, not just on a spec sheet.
  • Wi-Fi.The OLED moves to a faster, newer Wi-Fi standard, which means quicker downloads on a capable router and a more stable connection. It is a quiet upgrade that adds up over a library's worth of multi-gigabyte installs.

What stays the same

A lot, and this is where the LCD earns its place. Both models run the identical SteamOS experience — the same instant suspend and resume that makes the Deck the handheld it is, the same advantage over Windows handhelds in living-with-it terms. Both play the same games at the same performance. And critically, both use the same UHS-I microSD slot, so the storage situation is identical: the 104MB/s bus ceiling applies to both, and the same cards are the right buy for either. The accessory catch nobody mentions

Here is the practical trap. The two models are close in size but not identical, and that has real consequences for accessories. A case cut for the 2022 LCD may not close properly on an OLED, and several listings still on sale were written for the LCD without saying so clearly. The same goes for screen protectors: the OLED's panel is a slightly different size, so a protector cut for the LCD may not align on it. Before you buy either, confirm the listing names your exact model — this is the failure we see most, and it is entirely avoidable.

There is a second, subtler accessory note that is specific to the OLED, and it involves the screen protector decision. An anti-glare, matte protector scatters reflected light — brilliant outdoors — but it also softens the image and mutes colour. On the LCD that is a fair trade. On the OLED, you are dulling the exact contrast and punch you paid a premium for. So if you own an OLED and play mostly indoors, keep it glossy. One more shared trait worth naming: the controls, ergonomics and trackpads are the same across both models. The OLED did not change the shape of the device in your hands or the button layout — it refined the screen and the internals behind it. So every accessory that depends on the grip rather than the screen — most grip cases, thumbstick caps, back-button add-ons — behaves the same on both. It is specifically the screen-adjacent accessories, the cases that close over the panel and the protectors that sit on it, where the size difference actually bites.

Should you worry about OLED burn-in?

It is the question every OLED buyer eventually asks, so here is the honest version. Burn-in is a real property of OLED panels — a static image left on screen for very long periods can, in principle, leave a faint permanent mark. In practice, for a handheld that mixes games, menus and sleep, and that you are not leaving on a single static HUD for days at a stretch, it is not something most owners will ever encounter. Valve builds in the usual mitigations, and normal gaming use is exactly the kind of varied content OLED handles without trouble. We would not let burn-in talk you out of the OLED; we would just say do not use it as a permanent static display and you will never think about it again.

Who the LCD is genuinely the right buy for

We keep saying the OLED is the better machine, so it is worth being clear about who should still choose the LCD without hesitation. If the price difference is the thing standing between you and owning a Steam Deck at all, buy the LCD — a Deck in your hands beats a nicer Deck you did not buy. If you find a genuinely good deal on an LCD, new or second-hand, the value can swing the maths its way. And if you play mostly in a bright room, where the OLED's contrast advantage is least visible, you give up less than the spec gap suggests. None of those buyers is settling; they are matching the purchase to their actual situation, which is the whole job of a page like this.

So which should you buy?

Buy the OLED unless the price gap is a real problem for you. The screen alone justifies it for most people, and the battery, weight and Wi-Fi upgrades stack on top. It is the better handheld, and nothing on the OLED is a downgrade from the LCD.

Buy the LCD if the cheaper price is what gets you in the door, or if you find a genuinely good deal on one. You get the same games, the same performance and the same SteamOS experience that makes the Deck special. You are giving up a nicer screen and some quality of life, not the thing that makes a Steam Deck a Steam Deck. Neither choice is wrong; one is simply nicer and one is simply cheaper, and only you know which side of that line your budget sits on.
