Going from 60Hz to 144Hz is the single most noticeable upgrade you can make to how a game feels — more transformative than a jump in resolution, and obvious within seconds of moving the mouse. The one condition attached to it is simple and easy to forget: your PC has to be able to produce frames fast enough to feed the higher refresh rate, or you are paying for smoothness you never see.
Refresh rate is how many times per second the monitor redraws the image, measured in hertz. A 60Hz monitor redraws 60 times a second; a 144Hz monitor, 144 times. That sounds abstract until you put it in time. At 60Hz each frame sits on screen for about 1000/60 ≈ 16.7ms. At 144Hz each frame lasts about 1000/144 ≈ 6.9ms. Competitive shooters, esports titles and older games routinely run at hundreds of frames per second on modest hardware, so they feed a 144Hz panel effortlessly. The place to be careful is heavy, graphically demanding single-player games on a mid-range or older GPU — if a game only runs at 50-70fps on your machine, a 144Hz monitor helps far less than it would in a game hitting 200fps, because you are only using part of the refresh rate you paid for.

The obvious one is responsiveness — a more current image, less lag between moving your mouse and seeing the result. The quieter one is motion clarity: how sharp a moving object looks while it is moving.
On a normal “sample-and-hold” LCD, each frame is held static on screen until the next one arrives, and your eye smears that held frame as it tracks motion. The longer a frame is held, the more it smears. Because a 144Hz panel holds each frame for less than half as long as a 60Hz panel, moving objects are visibly sharper — you can read a name plate or track an enemy in fast motion that would be a blur at 60Hz. - People on weak GPUs — benefits least, for now. If your card cannot exceed 60fps in what you play, a 144Hz monitor is a promise you cannot yet cash. It still future- proofs a later GPU upgrade, but the smoothness arrives with the graphics card, not the panel.
How to check if your PC can actually feed it
Because the frame rate is what decides whether a 144Hz monitor is worth it, the smart move is to find out what your PC already produces before you spend anything. Turn on the frame-rate counter built into your graphics driver or a tool like the one bundled with most GPUs, then play the games you actually care about and watch the number. If a game is comfortably sitting well above 60fps — 90, 120, 150 and up — a 144Hz monitor will feel transformative in it. If it is hovering around 60 or below, that is your ceiling until you address the graphics card or turn settings down, and the panel alone will not lift it.
This one check saves people from the two classic mistakes: buying a high-refresh monitor for a machine that cannot feed it, and — just as common — assuming an older PC cannot benefit when in fact it already runs the buyer's favourite competitive games at hundreds of frames per second. Adaptive sync is the free companion upgrade
One practical tip that makes high refresh better in the real world: buy a monitor with adaptive sync (marketed as G-SYNC Compatible or FreeSync, both built on the VESA Adaptive-Sync standard). It lets the monitor vary its refresh rate to match your fluctuating frame rate, which eliminates the tearing you would otherwise see when frame rate and refresh rate drift out of step.
