How to Fix a Wireless Mouse That Keeps Disconnecting

A dropping wireless mouse is almost always a weak signal or a power setting, not a broken mouse. Work through the causes in order — battery, dongle placement, interference, cable, drivers and Windows power management — and most cases clear up in minutes.

A wireless mouse that keeps disconnecting is almost never a dead mouse — it is a weak or interrupted signal, a flat battery, or a Windows power setting quietly switching the receiver off. Work through the causes in order: charge or replace the battery first, then move the 2.4GHz dongle closer with a front port or a short USB extension, keep it away from USB 3.0 ports and phones, swap a worn cable, update the driver and firmware, and disable USB selective suspend so Windows stops powering the receiver down. Only when all of that fails is the mouse or its receiver genuinely faulty. The large majority of drop-outs are fixed by the first three steps, and none of them cost anything. The frustrating thing about a mouse that cuts out mid-game is how random it feels — a freeze, a jump, a second of dead cursor, then it is back as if nothing happened. That randomness is the clue: a genuinely broken mouse fails and stays failed, while an intermittent drop is a link being interrupted. So the fix is a process of elimination, from the cheapest and most common cause to the rarest, and this page walks it in that order.

1. Rule out the battery first

The single most common cause of a mouse that “keeps disconnecting” is a battery that is low enough to brown out under load. A wireless sensor draws more power when you move fast, so a marginal battery can hold a connection while the mouse sits still and drop it the instant you flick — which reads exactly like a signal fault but is not. If your mouse is rechargeable, plug it in and use it wired for a session. If the drop-outs stop the moment it is on a cable, the battery was your problem, full stop. If it takes AA or AAA cells, fit a fresh set rather than trusting a half-used pair, because alkaline cells sag under current well before they read as empty.

Two related traps are worth naming. First, a tired rechargeable cell that no longer holds a full charge behaves like a low battery even straight off the dock — if the mouse is a few years old and drops out soon after charging, suspect the cell. Second, some mice have an aggressive sleep timer: they power the radio down after a few idle seconds to save battery and take a heartbeat to wake, which looks like a stutter when you come back to the desk. That one is normal and not a fault, but it is worth knowing so you do not chase it.

2. Move the receiver closer — the fix that solves most cases

If the battery is not it, distance and obstruction almost certainly are. A 2.4GHz dongle has a small antenna and a modest power budget, and it wants a short, clear line to the mouse. The classic mistake is plugging the receiver into a rear USB port on a desktop, so the signal has to fight through a metal case, a tangle of cables and the desk itself to reach a mouse a metre away. The fixes, in order of how often they work:

  • Use a front or top USB port. On a desktop, the front-panel ports put the dongle out in the open and much closer to the mouse, which alone clears a large share of drop-outs.
  • Use a short USB extension cable. This is the trick the manufacturers themselves ship in the box for a reason. Run a short extension from the PC and stand the dongle on the desk near the mousepad, lifting it out from behind the case and up into clear air. It is the highest-impact single change you can make.
  • Clear the line of sight.A large metal object — the PC case, a steel monitor stand, an external drive — sitting between the dongle and the mouse absorbs the signal. Even shifting the receiver to the same side of the case as the mouse can help.

The reason this works is physical, not magical: 2.4GHz is a short, easily-blocked wavelength, and halving the distance or removing one metal barrier makes a disproportionate difference to a link that was already marginal. If a laptop is the host, the same logic applies — a dongle buried in a rear port behind the screen hinge is worse placed than one in a side port near your hand.

Interference: USB 3.0 ports, hubs and phones

There is one specific, well-documented gremlin here that catches people out: USB 3.0 ports and devices emit radio noise right in the 2.4GHz band, and a 2.4GHz mouse dongle plugged in directly next to a USB 3.0 port, hub or cable can be swamped by it. This is not a conspiracy theory — the USB Implementers Forum acknowledges the interference and it is a known reason wireless peripherals stutter next to fast storage. The fix is the same as above: get the dongle away from the noisy port using the extension cable, and do not plug the receiver into the same hub as an external SSD or a USB 3.0 device. A charging phone, a wireless headset dongle, a Wi-Fi router sat on the desk and even a microwave in the next room all share that crowded band too, so a little separation between the receiver and other 2.4GHz gear pays off. If the drops correlate with a specific device switching on, you have found your culprit.

3. Rule out the cable

This matters whether your mouse is charging or running wired as a test. A cheap, worn or damaged USB cable causes exactly the intermittent drops you are chasing — a hairline break in the conductor or a loose connector cuts out when the cable flexes as you move the mouse. If a wired test still drops, do not conclude the mouse is dead until you have tried a different, known-good cable. Reseat it firmly at both ends too, because a connector that is not fully home is a classic intermittent fault. On a rechargeable mouse, a failing cable also means it is not truly charging, which loops you straight back to the battery problem in step one.

4. Update the driver and the firmware

Software is the next layer. Two different updates matter, and people conflate them:

  • The Windows driver.An out-of-date, generic or corrupted USB/mouse driver can cause a device to drop and re-enumerate. In Windows Device Manager you can update the driver, or uninstall the device and let Windows reinstall it cleanly on the next reconnect. Microsoft's own support guidance walks through updating and reinstalling device drivers if you are unsure where to look.
  • The mouse firmware.This is the software running on the mouse and dongle themselves, updated through the manufacturer's app (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, and so on). Firmware updates frequently fix connection-stability bugs specifically, so if your mouse has a companion app, check it for a pending update for both the mouse and the receiver.

While you are in the manufacturer's app, look for a re-pair or re-bind option. If the mouse and dongle have partly lost their pairing, forcing them to re-pair can restore a solid link. It is a thirty-second step that occasionally fixes a stubborn case outright.

5. Stop Windows turning the mouse off

This is the fix people miss most, and it is a big one. To save power, Windows can suspend a USB device it thinks is idle — and a mouse or its receiver that gets suspended has to wake up before it responds, which shows up as a freeze or a drop. There are two settings to change, both documented in Microsoft's Windows support pages:

  • Disable “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” In Device Manager, open the mouse and the USB Root Hubs under the Power Management tab and clear that checkbox. This stops Windows powering the device down mid-use.
  • Disable USB selective suspend. In the advanced power plan settings, find the USB settings and turn USB selective suspend off. This is the system-wide version of the same behaviour and is a very common cause of a wireless mouse that dies after a period of light use.

On a laptop, also make sure you are on a balanced or high-performance power plan rather than an aggressive battery-saver, which is more likely to cut power to peripherals. These changes cost you a negligible amount of battery and routinely cure drop-outs that looked like a hardware fault.

Polling rate and surface

Two smaller factors round this out. 2.4GHz versus Bluetooth reliability

If your mouse can connect both ways, the connection you choose affects how solid it feels. A dedicated 2.4GHz dongle is the more robust, lower-latency link and the one to use at the desk; Bluetooth is more convenient but its general-purpose stack is more prone to brief hitches when the band is busy, and some mice sleep more aggressively over Bluetooth to save power. When the mouse or receiver is genuinely faulty

If you have charged the battery, moved the dongle to a front port on an extension away from USB 3.0 gear, swapped the cable, updated the driver and firmware, re-paired, and disabled the power-saving settings, and it still drops — then, and only then, is a hardware fault likely. Isolate which half is at fault: try the mouse and its dongle on a completely different computer. If it drops there too, the mouse or receiver is the problem; if it is rock-solid on the other machine, something on the original PC (a driver, a port, interference) is still the cause. A dongle can fail on its own, and on some mice a replacement receiver can be paired, which is far cheaper than a new mouse. The short version

Work top to bottom and stop when the drops stop. Charge or replace the battery. Move the 2.4GHz dongle to a front port, ideally on a short USB extension, and keep it clear of USB 3.0 ports, hubs and phones. Try a different, known-good cable and reseat it. Update the mouse driver and the firmware, and re-pair the mouse to its dongle. Only after all of that should you suspect a faulty mouse or receiver — and the two-computer test tells you which.
