How to Choose a Gaming Headset: A Buyer's Guide
Choosing a headset is a handful of decisions, made in the right order: how it connects, open or closed, what you play, the mic, the comfort, and the platforms it has to reach. Here is the framework.

Choosing a gaming headset feels overwhelming because the marketing throws a hundred features at you, but it is really a short list of decisions made in order: how it connects (wired, a 2.4GHz dongle, or Bluetooth), whether it is open-back or closed-back, what you actually need for footsteps and positional audio, how good the mic has to be, whether it is comfortable enough for your sessions, and which platforms it has to reach. Get those right, ignore the spec-sheet noise, and almost any reputable headset in your budget will make you happy. This guide walks each decision, in the order that matters.
The trap with headsets is that the box lists things — driver size, a surround logo, an RGB glow, a big battery number — and none of those tell you whether the headset is right for you. The better approach is to reason from how you play. Below are the decisions that actually change the experience, roughly in the order you should make them, with a note on where the marketing is honest and where it is noise.
1. How it connects: wired, 2.4GHz, or Bluetooth
The first and biggest decision is the connection, because it sets both the price-to-performance and the reliability of everything else. There are three options, and it is worth being precise, because two of them are “wireless” and they behave nothing alike.

A wired headset does not pay for a radio, a battery or the certification that goes with them, so at any given price it puts more into the drivers, pads and mic. The second decision shapes how the headset sounds more than any single spec, and almost no gaming headset explains it, because most of them are closed and would rather not draw attention to what an open design does better.
A closed-backheadset seals the driver behind a solid earcup. 3. What actually matters for footsteps and positional audio
If you play competitive shooters, this is the decision you came for, and it is where the marketing is least honest. The thing that helps you hear footsteps is not a “7.1 surround” logo on the box — it is clean stereo imaging: a headset that reproduces the mid and upper frequencies accurately, so quiet directional cues (a footstep, a reload, a distant gunshot) are audible and you can tell where they are. 4. The mic: boom vs beamforming
If anyone has to understand you — teammates, a Discord call, a stream — the mic matters, and there is a real quality gap between the two common types. A boom mic, the arm that swings down near your mouth, is close to the source and easy to isolate from background noise, so it sounds clearly better; the best of them detach or retract so the headset still looks normal out of the house. The most important spec is the one least likely to be on the box: whether the headset is comfortable for as long as you actually play. Three things decide it.
